Diagnostic ultrasound, also called sonography or diagnostic ultrasonography, is an imaging method that uses the sound waves produced from ultrasound imaging equipment to produce high-quality images of different internal structures and organs. These images are crucial as they can provide valuable information to help diagnose certain conditions and diseases. The diagnostic process can then help pave the way for treatment of these conditions and diseases.
Ultrasounds are noninvasive and painless procedures that involve scanning different areas of the body. There is no radiation involved. Each ultrasound procedure that is performed serves a different purpose.
A safe, water-based gel is applied to the skin over the body area that will be examined. This gel is very important because it helps prevent air pockets which can block the sound waves that create the images that are needed.
A trained technician called a sonographer presses a small, hand-held device called a transducer on the area to be examined. The sonographer will move the transducer over the area as needed to capture the images. This transducer will send sound waves into the body and collect the ones that bounce back. The images that are collected are then sent to a computer and displayed on a screen.
The sonographer will capture and store the most useful and diagnostic images. These selected images are shared with a physician trained to analyze and interpret ultrasound images to be able to provide a reliable and accurate diagnosis.
When it comes to the practice of ultrasonography, certification plays a crucial role
in performing the examinations, constructing high-quality images, and analyzing
and interpreting these images to render an accurate diagnosis. Knowing how to
accurately perform and interpret ultrasound images takes years of training and
experience. Medical professionals who have obtained certification from APCA and
credentials from ARDMS have the knowledge and skills necessary to perform
examinations, interpret images, and provide a reliable diagnosis while
maintaining the highest standards in ultrasound practice.
